"FIDO...FROM FAT TO FIT:
A CANINE FITNESS CHALLENGE"
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, OVER 50% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight. Overweight animals face the same threatening health conditions as we do, including diabetes, heart disease, bladder infections, arthritis, pain and lethargy. In an effort to provide a long-term solution for pet owners with overweight pets, Sun Dog Cat Moon vet clinic and Dolittle's are hosting a friendly pet weight-loss competition, "Fido...From Fat to Fit," starting this month.
SIGNS YOU HAVE AN OVERWEIGHT DOG!
- You are unable to easily feel your dog’s ribs. There should be a slight amount of fat over them, but each rib should be distinct.
- Look at your pet from above. The animal should have a definite waist behind the ribs. If there is no
- waist, or the area between the ribs and hips is wider than the hips or ribs, your dog is overweight.
- Look at the pet from the side. The abdominal tuck (the area behind the ribs) should be smaller in
- diameter than the chest.
- Your dog always tired, panting after a small amount of exercise, and avoids playing games.
"FIDO...FROM FAT TO FIT" CONTEST SPECIFICS:
- Fido is a 12-week competition addressing the issues of pet diet, weight and health
- Interviews for potential contestants will be conducted and the official competition will launch in mid-January
- Competition will consist of bi-weekly activities and workshops with some of Charleston's leading pet experts, followed by required weigh-ins. Activities will include swimming, walking, training sessions, pet massage and seminars on pet health and diet.
- Winner will be determined by the percentage of weight lost during weigh-ins and total loss at the conclusion of the competition
- Winner will be announced at the Mt. Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park Pet Fest on Saturday, April 10 and will receive a year of free dog food sponsored by Natura & Dolittle's.
