Dr. Ruth grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from the Louisville Collegiate School in 1981. After working with cattle and pigs on the farm at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC, she received a degree in Biology and Work in 1986. She graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990.

In 1990, Dr. Ruth moved to South Carolina and worked on Johns Island and downtown before buying a practice in the North area. During the next 14 years of her veterinary practice, she received training in Ultrasonography, Laser surgery, and practiced at a high level of western veterinary medicine. As time went by, Dr. Ruth began to see that although disease processes could be diagnosed, many pets could not regain a good quality of life, in spite of available treatments. Dr. Ruth developed health problems of her own, for which western medicine had few effective and safe long-term treatments. Out of frustration, she found help and relief through Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2006 Dr. Ruth began studying Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), and became certified in acupuncture. In August of 2007, she sold her practice in order to open Sun Dog Cat Moon and is now certified in Food Therapy, Chinese Herbology and Regenerative Medicine/Stem-Cell Therapy.

Dr. Ruth lives on Johns Island with her partner, Renata, their 3 dogs Esau, Sam & Ollie, and 4 kitties Romy, Bill, Elsa & Pepe.
