                                          Acupuncture For Pets

                                          What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a method of stimulating a point along a meridian or channel associated with a specific organ. Acupressure uses the same points, and this is a treatment that can be done by lay people as well as doctors. Moxibustion involves burning an herb to help warm and stimulate a point. Stimulating points causes blood to flow again, thereby alleviating disease and pain.

Acupuncture utilizes tiny thin needles to stimulate the points. The placement of the needles causes very little, if any, discomfort.  During a treatment most animals become very relaxed; they may even become sleepy and yawn.

What are the types of acupuncture for animals you offer?

                                          • Electroacupuncture: a small amount of electrical current can be passed through the needle. This is especially beneficial in chronic painful conditions like arthritis and disk disease, but is also useful in internal medicine type diseases.
                                          • Aquapuncture: a technique using Vitamin B12 injection at acupuncture points to provide longer stimulation of the point.
                                          • Hemoacupuncture: involves allowing a small drop of blood to be released from an acupuncture point to clear heat or excess, as in the case of fever, infection or pain.
                                          • Dry Needling: the needle stimulating an acupoint.
                                          • Laser Therapy: a needle-free method used to stimulate acupuncture points. It is a good alternative for animals that are needle phobic, and allows a treatment to occur rapidly with no discomfort for the pet.

What conditions does acupuncture for animals treat?

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of animal conditions, most commonly are hip dysplasia, arthritis, disk disease, urinary tract disease, Cushing’s disease, kidney failure, respiratory problems, such as asthma, skin problems, such as allergic dermatitis or lick granulomas, gastrointestinal problems, such as chronic diarrhea or constipation, and neurologic disease, such as epilepsy or paralysis.

                                          What does the process entail?

Acupuncture provides pain relief and a feeling of well being through the release of natural endorphins or pain killers in the body. The number of acupuncture points used depends on your pet’s personality, age, and level of strength. In general, older animals have fewer points treated. Animals with more excitable constitutions are less tolerant of needling, so typically have fewer points treated. Treatments are generally combined with Chinese herbal medicine to allow treatments to be spaced every 2 weeks. The initial visit will take 30-45 minutes, and subsequent visits will take about 15 to 30 minutes.

                                          What results should I expect?

Acupuncture’s effects are cumulative. It can sometimes take up to 3 treatments before you will see any results for your pet, though most animals receive a benefit from the first treatment. About 10% of animals and people will be slightly worse after the first treatment. This can be alarming, but generally means that the patient will respond well to treatment and find acupuncture healing.

Animals who receive acupuncture recover more quickly from illnesses and surgery and often respond more quickly to traditional therapies and have an improved sense of well being and mobility. Acupuncture bridges a gap between medicine and surgery and can often be used when medications are not working or are contraindicated due to possible side effects.
